Shuttle Bus Service
Do you offer FREE pick-up and drop-off service?
Yes, we offer a free shuttle bus service to our customers at Keflavik International Airport and within the greater Keflavik area. This service is both available for customers who are picking up their camper van and those who are returning it. Please select the shuttle service option when making your booking and type in your information. We pickup from the airport every hour on the 15th minute (every 30 minutes the last two hours of the day), and typically it takes around 30-50 minutes to get through baggage claim and custom so try to select the pickup time at least 30 minutes after you land.
If you don’t have your address or flight information yet, don’t worry, you can always send it to us later but make sure to do so as soon as possible. We will send you a reminder a few days before your rental starts. Our shuttle will give you a ride from the airport or hotel to our office, where you will pick up your campervan and begin your rental. When you return the camper van, you can use our free shuttle to get back to the airport or your hotel in the Keflavik area, but the shuttle will run approx. every 30 minutes, so there is no need to schedule it in advance. The shuttle service is available from 08:15-17:00 for arriving customers but from 08:00-16:30 for customers returning their campervan.
Where will I find you at Keflavik airport?
We will wait for you in the arrival hall at the airport, holding a sign with your name on it. Please make sure to look out for us at your scheduled pickup time and let us know when you see us. We pickup to the airport every hour on the 15th minute, so 8:15, 9:15 etc..if you missed the scheduled shuttle time you can expect us to come pick you up the next hour. We will use the shuttle bus to drive you to our office, which will only take about 10 minutes. The earliest airport pickup we provide is 8:15.
Do I need to schedule a shuttle to the airport/hotel when I return the camper?
No, the shuttle will run every hour (on the hour) for customers returning the camper van, so there is no need to schedule a shuttle for returning customers. Just remember that our latest airport shuttle dropoff is at 16:30, not 17:00, so make sure that you return the camper van before 16:30 if you want a ride to the airport.
Can I use your free shuttle service if I’m outside the Keflavik area?
We only offer our free shuttle service within the Keflavik area. We do not offer our shuttle service to or from Reykjavik, which is about a 40 minute drive. To go to/from Reykjavik, we recommend booking a ticket on the airport/city bus with Grayline or Reykjavik Excursions. We can drive you to/pick you up from the airport when you use the airport bus during our office hours. You can also use the public bus number 55 which stops close to our office and goes to the airport and Reykjavik, you can find more info on www.bus.is . The final option is a Taxi which is quite expensive unfortunately.
Payments and Cost
What is included in the rental price?
The rental price includes unlimited kilometers, 24 % VAT tax, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), bedding (sheet, pillows, blankets, duvets), and basically everything you need to cook, eat and sleep in the camper van. Please review terms and conditions and the information page for your camper van category before booking the van. Take a look at the Extras section of our website for additional amenities, but you can choose to add those extras during the booking process.
How is the price calculated?
You pay low-season (Oct-Apr) price for low-season days, mid-season (May,Sep) price for mid-season days, and high-season (June-Aug) price for high-season days. For example, if you rental is from May 29th (mid-season) to June 3rd (high-season), you will pay for 3 days at mid-season price and 2 days at high-season price. All current prices are available on our website.
Where do I get the best price?
Our best prices are always online, so the cheapest and easiest way to book a camper is using our website. No hidden deals, VIP discounts, rebate programs, or silly things like that. We keep it simple and fair for everybody.
When do I pay for the rental?
You either pay 30% confirmation fee/deposit when you reserve your booking or the total 100%. If you select the 3ö% payment option you will pay the rest upon arrival at our office in Stapabraut 21, 260 Reykjanesbæ. You can pay the remaining 70% with a credit card or debit card when you arrive. However, remember that even if you decide to pay with a debit card, you always need a valid credit card from the lessee (the renter) for security and insurance reasons.
Can I get a refund if I return the camper early?
No, refunds are not given for returning the camper early. However, you can change your reservation without any fees before you start your rental, even when you are picking up the van at our office. Once your rental starts, we cannot change your booking and give refunds.
Do I have to pay in advance when booking online?
Yes, we require at least a 30% deposit when reserving your camper van, although you also have the option to pay the full rental upfront. You will need to pay this amount with a credit card. The rest you will pay upon arrival at our office in Stapabraut 21, 260 Reykjanesbæ and are able to use a debit or credit card.
When will you charge my credit card?
You will be charged either the 30% of the total amount when you reserve the camper or the full 100% if you choose to do so. The rest you will pay upon arrival.
How can I pay for the rental?
You can confirm your booking by paying either a 30% deposit or for the entire rental during our secure online booking process. When paying online, you will need to use a credit card. If you pay the 30% deposit online, you can pay for the remaining 70% at our office with a debit card or credit card. This card does not need to be the same card that you used to pay the 30% deposit. We cannot accept cash in any currency, including Euros and Icelandic Krona or any other payment method, such as a wire transfer or PayPal. Just remember that we always need a valid credit card from the lessee (driver) for security and insurance reasons.
Do I need to bring a credit card when I pick up the camper van?
Yes, even if you are not paying with a credit card, you will need to bring the lessee´s (driver´s) credit card or the credit card you used when you reserved the booking to put on file for insurance purposes.
Does it matter which credit card I bring?
Yes. We will always need the lessee's (driver's) credit card on file for insurance reasons.
What is the fuel service fee?
If the rental car is not returned with a full tank of fuel, we will charge the renter for the fuel (based on current fuel prices) + ISK 2,000 service fee for filling up the tank.
What kind of insurance do you offer?
All of our insurance options are listed under the Extras section of our website, except for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which is included with your rental. Tryggingamidstodin Hf. (TM) is our insurance provider and all of our insurance falls under their policy terms 220 (Third-Party Liability Insurance for Motor Vehicles) and 230 (Comprehensive Insurance for Motor Vehicles), which you can access here. Here is a quick overview of our Insurance options:
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included with all rentals. It is a standard vehicle insurance and limits the driver's liability to EUR 2,500.- It is possible to waive this insurance if your own insurance provider requires you to do so, but we do not recommend it.If anything happens to the vehicle you will need to pay the full damage before leaving our office, no matter how high the cost is.
Third-Party Liability Insurance is Included with all rentals.
Premium Package Plus Is a full comprehensive insurance. It reduces the self risk to zero on all insurances to give you a total peace of mind and also includes free services like vehicle lockout, incorrect fueling and dead battery assistance. The price is EUR 75 per day.
Premium Package includes all of the extra insurances that we offer for a discounted price or EUR 40. This means the self risk depends on the damage, for example for a collision or dents the self risk is EUR 600 (SCDW Insurance) and for Sand & Ash damages the self risk is EUR 1,000. For gravel chips, theft or flat tires the self risk would be zero.
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) is the same insurance as CDW but lowers the self risk to € 600 for a fee of € 20 per day.
Gravel Protection covers damages to the entire front of the camper van, including the windshield, headlights, and hood, caused by gravel that gets thrown at the rental car by another car. There is no self risk and the insurance costs € 10 per day.
Tire Insurance covers your from all tire cost if you get a flat tire. If you damage a tire so that it needs to be replaced, you are not responsible for the cost. Just change to the spare tire, call our service phone, and we will guide you through the process of getting a new tire and you won´t pay anything. There is no self risk and the insurance costs € 10 per day.
Theft Insurance protects you from paying any self risk if the camper van is stolen. If you do not have this insurance and the vehicle is stolen, you will only have to pay self risk of € 2,500 but with this insurance there is no self risk and it costs € 5 per day.
Sand & Ash Insurance covers damages to the camper van caused by sandstorm / ash. Self risk is € 1,000 and the price is € 5 per day.

What kind of insurance do you recommend?
The answer to this question really depends on personal preference, as people’s needs for peace of mind can vary greatly. We have witnessed many cases where people regret not buying extra insurance due to a costly incident and also cases where people never use the extra insurance that they bought. That is simply the nature of insurance; it is highly valuable when you need it but useless when you don’t. We simply cannot make that decision for others.
We can, however, tell you that our top 3 most popular extra insurance options are gravel protection, the Premium Package and the Premium Package plus. We always recommend the Gravel protection as a minimum as it's the most common damage to our cars.
Before you make any decisions about extra insurance, make sure to read our Terms for more information about the included CDW insurance. Also, make sure to check with your regular car insurance policy and any other insurance policies that you may have, such as your travel insurance, credit card benefits, etc.
Is insurance included in the rental price?
Yes, a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in the rental price, which limits the driver's liability to a certain amount. The liability amount is EUR 2.500,- for each accident. Please review the terms & conditions for CDW details before booking a campervan.
Can I change the insurance when I pick up the camper van?
Yes, you can.
Do you offer 3 or 4-person campers?
Yes, you can simply add a roof tent to your Happy 2 or Happy 4x4 booking during checkout. The Happy 2 and Happy 4x4 allow 2 people to sleep inside the van and the roof tent adds space for another 2 people.
Roof tents - how do they work?
If you are renting a Happy 2 or Happy 4x4 camper, you can add a roof tent to your rental during checkout. Your camper will then be equipped with a roof tent, which adds sleeping space for 2 people. We use the trusted medium-sized Columbus roof tents by Autohome which you can read more about here. You can also see photos and dimensions of the roof tent on the Happy 2 and Happy 4x4 info pages.
These tents are known for their strength and safety, which is always a Happy Campers priority. They are designed for extreme camping and are well-suited for winter camping. Please be aware that the heater is located inside the camper only - not the tent. So you can expect cold temperatures, similar to using a regular tent, and need to prepare/pack accordingly.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
The campervan comes with a sheet, pillows, blankets, and light comforters, which most people are comfortable with during the summer months. However, we also include sleeping bags as a part of our winter kit in the low season (Oct-April). That leaves the mid-season (May and Sept) as the main season we strongly recommend bringing (or renting) sleeping bags as the weather can vary a lot in those months. Sleeping bags are also recommended in the summer time for those who get very easily cold.
Is smoking allowed?
No, smoking is not allowed in the van or in our office. Travelers will have to pay the extra cleaning fee if we find evidence for smoking in the van.
Does the camper van have a toilet and shower?
No, our campers do not have a toilet or shower. The reason is that our goal is to make our camper vans as simple as possible to drive and operate. Showers and travel toilets require a lot of space and are complicated to operate. But do not worry, in Iceland there are many gas stations, small shops, and restaurants where you can use the bathroom facilities.
You can also find our famous geothermal swimming pools in almost every small village around the island where you can swim, shower, go to the hot tubs etc. for a very small fee. Most campgrounds also offer good facilities for travelers to use. For this reason, we decided to not have toilets and showers in our camper vans.
What kind of camper vans do you have?
You can see all the different camper types we offer on the front page of our website. We offer campers of every size, manual and automatic, old (EX) and new. Actual make and model may vary depending on availability, so we reserve the right to deliver a similar vehicle. By similar vehicle, we mean that we will deliver a vehicle that will fulfill the requirements of the vehicle type and class that you booked. Not all our camper vans are brand new, but they are all well maintained and in very good condition.
Do I have to return the camper van clean?
We ask all of our customers to return the camper van in good shape, inside and outside. We do not require you to return the camper van completely clean, but if it is exceptionally dirty, requiring difficult stain removal or other special cleaning efforts, we will charge a cleaning fee of €100.
Can we use a child seat in the campervan?
To guarantee security, we only allow child seats in Happy 2, Happy 2 EX, Happy 3, and Happy 3 EX categories. However, note that only 1 child seat is allowed in Happy 2 EX and Happy 3 EX camper vans, while 2 child seats fit in the Happy 2 and Happy 3 camper vans. If your child is over 130CM in height it's also possible to turn off the Airbag in the front seat of the Happy 1 Auto.
How can I listen to music in my campervan?
All good road trips include good music! Depending on the campervan category, you will find the following features in each camper van:

How can I charge my electronics (phone, camera, etc.) during my trip?
Our camper vans have a standard 12V car socket (cigarette lighter). Our Happy 2 camper vans have two 12V sockets, while other categories have just one. All of the newer vans (not EX) have at least 1 USB port as well. We highly recommend bringing your own inverters, converters, cables, and multi-plugs for your charging needs. We offer a 12V-230V (European system) inverter that you can rent for EUR 20 per rental. The inverter will transform the 12V socket into a standard European outlet that you can use to charge your devices.
Are your campervans 4x4 vehicles? Do you have any 4x4 campers?
Yes the Happy 4x4 is FWD and is suitable for driving in the highlands. However keep in mind that river crossing is forbidden a part for a few places like Landmannalaugar. Please contact us for more information about highland driving.
Are your campervans suitable to drive in Iceland in winter?
Yes, we only stay open during the months that it is safe and relatively easy to drive our camper vans around Iceland. We equip our camper vans with winter tires during the winter months, and the mains roads are generally well-maintained and cleared by the government to make driving safe and easy. However, Iceland is known for unpredictable weather, so we highly recommend paying close attention to the weather and road conditions. Be cautious, use common sense, and always err on the side of safety.
Do you have automatic campers?
Yes we do ! The Happy 1 Auto and Happy 4x4 are both automatic.
Do your camper vans have Wifi?
Yes, all our camper vans are equipped with a premium WiFi system with unlimited data. Up to 5 devices can be connected to the WiFi, so everybody can share their amazing Iceland photos and videos with their jealous friends during their trip.
For a single fee of EUR 40, everybody in your group can enjoy reliable WiFi with unlimited data for your entire trip. Simple as that. As a safety measure the WiFi is free of charge with low season (Oct-Apr) rentals.
Please note that the WiFi is limited to the 4G network infrastructure in Iceland. This means that the WiFi can be spotty is the most remote places in Iceland and this will be true for any WiFi service in Iceland.
How does the Webasto heating system work?
Unlike many other campervan rentals, our campervans include a high-quality Webasto heating system to keep you warm. The system takes power from fuel and from the extra battery, so make sure that your fuel tank is not completely empty when you are about to use the heating system.
To guarantee that your battery does not drain completely, we do not recommend running the heating system throughout the entire night. We suggest keeping it running for a good while before going to bed, and then turning it off right before going to sleep, relying on your comforter and/or sleeping bag to keep your warm after that. You can then turn it on again as soon as you wake up.
The heating system is very easy to operate; simply turn the heat button to your preferred heat level and wait a few minutes before it kicks in. The system will always run at full power, but it will take breaks for longer periods of time depending on how low you set the heat button. Make sure that the heat exhaust area is completely clear and is not blocked by anything that easily melts.
What is the fuel consumption ?
Our van's fuel consumption/mileage is the following:
Happy 1: approx. 6-7 liters/100Km. Fuel tank size is 60 liters.
Happy 2: approx. 7-8 liters/100Km. Fuel tank size is 70 liters
Happy 3: approx. 8-10 liters/100Km. Fuel tank size is 100 liters
Happy Ex: approx. 7-10 liters/100Km.
Are extra gas canisters included in the van?
Yes, 4 extra gas canisters come with the camper van for free. This is in addition to the leftover gas in the canister from the previous rental. This will usually last 10-12 days of cooking for 2 people but 7-10 days for 4 people.
For longer rentals, or people who are planning on using the gas stove a lot, we suggest purchasing extra gas canisters, as they can be difficult to buy in other locations around Iceland.
Do your camper vans have a tracking system?
Yes, all of our camper vans have a tracking system installed for safety reasons. In case of an emergency, we will be able to locate you quickly and send help right away. This tracking feature cannot be turned off at any point for this reason.
Traveling in Iceland
Do I need to book campsites ahead of time?
No, you don't have to make reservations for campsites in Iceland. All campsites in Iceland operate under the "first come, first served" principle and rarely get completely full.
Will it be too cold to travel in a camper van?
Answering questions about how cold it is can be tricky, as people’s tolerance for cold can be very different.
The short answer is that most people never have major issues with the cold in our camper vans, especially during the summer months. In the winter, we suggest bringing/renting an extra sleeping bag and obviously a lot of warm clothes. That, in addition to the included beddings and heating system keeps most people warm enough. If you are highly sensitive to cold temperatures, we suggest that you make special preparations to stay comfortable.
Where can I get groceries for my trip?
There are several good supermarkets close to our office in Reykjanesbær. We recommend either Krónan or Bónus, since they are the two cheapest options. Ask us about them at our office and we can show you on a map.
How should I plan my trip?
It's always good to be well prepared and thankfully there are many good resources online. Where can we park/stay overnight?
New legislation prohibits parking overnight in a camper van outside organized campsites or urban areas. You may still set up a traditional tent in Iceland, with some restrictions. Please ask us about the details of camping with a traditional tent if interested. The most important thing to know is that different rules now apply to camper vans, so you always need to find an organized campsite to spend the night. Should I buy the camping card? Where do I do that?
The camping card can be a good solution for people who plan on staying at certain campsites during their trip. However, note that the camping card only gives access to certain campsites around the country.
See theirwebsite Camping Cards for more information about participating campsites and purchase options. It will cost a small fee to stay at any campsite in Iceland, but whether you should buy the camping card or not really depends on your preferred route and schedule around the country.
My flight arrives before you open. What should I do in the meantime?
Unfortunately, some flights arrive in Iceland REALLY early. Our office opens at 8 AM and our free airport shuttle starts running at 8:15, so you might have some time to kill until we can pick you up. Thankfully, the airport has free WiFi, some comfortable chairs, and a coffee shop to make the wait easier. Around 8:15, please look out for us holding a Happy Campers sign with your name on it.
How does your 24/7 dropoff service work?
When using our booking engine, you are choosing to use this service if you select a dropoff time outside our 08:00-17:00 office hours. If you decide to use this service, please keep the following in mind:
- We won't be there to assist you when you return the van.
- Please leave the van in the designated "campervan dropoff" area
- You will have to leave your campervan key in the designated return box by the front entrance
- You won't be present during the campervan inspection. This means that in case of car damage, we can only communicate with you remotely, through email and/or phone. We will be unable to give you an idea of expected cost or provide you with other useful information that we try to give our travelers in those circumstances in person.
- You will not have access to our free shuttle service. Please check out our shuttle schedule here.
- We will not be able to provide you with a physical copy of your invoice. You can always email us if you need digital copies or have questions about anything.
- We cannot guarantee assistance with your campervan dropoff even if you end up returning the van late when the office has opened. For example, if you schedule a dropoff time at 06:00 but end up returning at 08:30 without letting us know, your dropoff will still be considered "after hours" with all the limitations it entails, such as the free shuttle.
Do you offer emergency breakdown assistance?
Absolutely! We offer a 24/7 roadside assistance service for all of our customers. Just call our service number (which you will get when you arrive) and we will help you find a solution to your problem. We weren’t kidding about keeping things simple, easy, and fun.
Please keep in mind that we have limited resources and are only located in Keflavik. We use any means necessary to find a solution to your problem. In some cases, we drive to your breakdown location ourselves, while in other cases we might send a 3rd party. If the easiest solution requires you to take certain actions, we might ask you to do that. This is not a 24/7 full-service roadside assistance with no questions asked. We simply guarantee to be available via our emergency phone at all times to make sure that your problem is solved.
What are your opening hours?
We are open all days from 8:00 to 17:00. Yes, that includes Sundays!
Do you close for winter?
Yes, we are closed during the harshest winter months of December and the early parts of January (to the 15th)
Can I pick up or return the camper van outside opening hours?
The campervan can only be picked up during our 08:00-17:00 opening hours. However, we offer a free 24/7 campervan dropoff service, so you can return the van at any time. Please read more about this service here or see the answer to this particular question above.
Where do we pick up and return the campervan?
Both the campervan pickup and return take place at our main office in Stapabraut 21, 260 Reykjanesbær. All of our campervan rentals begin and end at this location, so make sure to use our free shuttle service for an easy transport to or from our office. We do not offer to bring the camper to you in Reykjavik, or any other location, and we also do not accept the campervan to be returned at any other location.
What if my flight is delayed?
We’ve all been there and we feel your pain. But our opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:00 and we only offer a free shuttle service to/from the airport during those hours. If your flight is delayed, resulting in your arrival outside of our business hours, we suggest finding a place to stay until we open. Just let us know about this change immediately so we can reschedule the shuttle for you. For example, if your flight arrival changed from 15:00 to 22:00, you will have to pick up your camper van at 08:00 the next day, at the earliest. When/how can I contact you?
The best way to contact us is through our contact form on our front page. You can also send us an email directly to firstname.lastname@example.org. However, we only check and respond to emails during business hours (8-17). If you need to reach us immediately, please call our office at +354 578-7860. If you are currently traveling in Iceland in your camper and need emergency assistance, please call the emergency number provided in your handbook. If you are hurt or in danger, please call Iceland's emergency number 112 immediately.
Where should I wait for you at the airport?
After you go through baggage claim and customs, you will enter the arrivals area. You can wait anywhere in that area, including the seating area nearby. Please do not wait in the departures area or at the restaurants near the departure area. When it is getting close to your schedule shuttle time, please keep an eye out for us and let us know when you see us. We will be holding a sign with your name on it and will be wearing a Happy Campers jacket/shirt.
I can’t book a campervan on your website. What should I do?
If you get an error saying “No car in this category available on this date”, I’m afraid we don’t have any available camper vans. If you get an error saying “This category is not available at this time”, it means that you chose a date that is during our closing season (December-February). Our booking engine on our website has the most accurate and updated information about our availability and is the best place to book. Bookings are automatically scheduled in the most efficient way possible, so if you are getting an error, unfortunately we cannot help you find availability even if we wanted to. If you are flexible, try changing your dates slightly to find available rental periods and/or change the camper van category.
When will the rental contract become active?
The rental contract becomes active when you sign the contract at our Happy Campers office in Iceland.
Is it possible to add a third driver?
Yes, no problem. You can add up to two additional drivers. All drivers have to be over 21 years of age and show their driver's license at the Happy Campers office before starting the rental contract.
How old do I have to be to rent a campervan?
The minimum age to rent a campervan is 21 years old.
Do I need an international driver's license to rent a car?
No, a valid national or state driver's license is just fine.
I booked a camper but didn’t get a confirmation email. What should I do?
A confirmation e-mail should arrive to customers no later than 24 hours after the booking took place. If you have not received confirmation, please check the following:
- Did you finalize the booking process ?
- Did the confirmation e-mail go to your junk mail folder (spam)?
If you have checked those things, please send us an email to email@example.com with your information (name, email, pickup date) and we will check your booking and reply to you within 24 hours.
What is the minimum rental period?
The minimum rental period is 3 full days (72 hours). You are welcome to rent the camper van for a shorter period of time, but the charge will be for 3 days.
Can I make changes to my reservation?
Yes, we like to keep it simple and easy. You can make changes anytime you want without any fees. Please send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know what you want to change. Remember to include your reservation number, which you can find in your confirmation e-mail.
Can I cancel my reservation?
Yes, no problem. You can cancel your reservation but make sure to give us a 20 day notice. Our cancellation policy requires that you must send us an email to email@example.com 20 days prior to your pickup time! If you let us know 20 days or more in advance, your 30% deposit will be refunded completely. If not, your deposit is not refundable - no exceptions.an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know what you want to change. Remember to include your reservation number, which you can find in your confirmation e-mail.
