  • expand_moreWhat's your cancellation policy?
We offer a 100% refund up to 24 hours before your rental. If you want to cancel your booking, please email us at info@happycampers.is
  • expand_moreDo I need a credit card?
You will need to bring the lessee's (driver's) credit card or the credit card you used when you reserved the booking to put on file for insurance/liability purposes. Prepaid credit cards and debit cards are accepted if the customer purchases the Premium+ insurance or the Happiest Bundle.
    • The cardholder must be the same as the lessee.
    • A card must be brought physically. Photos or digital copies are not acceptable.
    • For fully paid in advance rentals, the lessee must bring the same card at pickup used to pay for the rental online.
  • expand_moreWhy the rental price has changed for the same dates since I looked earlier?

Our prices can change based on demand, season, and availability. This is because we use a dynamic pricing system—similar to how airlines and hotels work.

If you're looking for the best price, we recommend:
    • Booking early to lock in a lower rate
    • Traveling during the off-season (outside the summer months) for lower prices
    • Checking our Happy Discounts when booking

  • expand_moreWhy can't I book a camper on your website?
When using our booking engine, you are getting the most up-to-date live availability of our fleet. If you get an error message saying that your preferred van category is unavailable for your dates, unfortunately, that is true. If you are flexible, we recommend trying different dates to see if the van becomes available. If you receive an error during the payment process, there are several potential reasons, including your bank blocking the transaction. Please contact us if the problem persists.
  • expand_moreDo you have a minimum rental period?
Yes, our minimum rental period is 3 days (72 hours).  You are welcome to rent the camper van for a shorter period of time, but the charge will be for 3 days.
  • expand_moreDo I need an international driver's license to rent a car?
No, a valid national or state driver's license with Latin letters is all you need. If your driver’s license does not have Latin letters please bring an International driver’s license.
  • expand_moreHow do I pay for the rental?
We take all major credit cards and offer the following payment options:
    • Standard deposit: Pay 30% now and 70% when you pick up the van
    • Pay 100% now
Prepaid credit cards and debit cards are accepted if the customer purchases the Premium+ insurance or the Happiest Bundle.

If you want to extend your rental or add extras, you can do it by logging in my.happycampers.is If you need assistance modifying your booking please email info@happycampers.is
  • expand_moreHow can I pay the remaining balance?
You can settle the remaining balance via customer service portal my.happycampers.is. You can also pay the remaining amount upon arrival.
  • expand_moreCan I change my booking when I pick up the camper van?

Yes, absolutely! When you arrive, you can:

    • Add or remove insurance options
    • Add or remove extras (like tables, chairs, etc.)
    • Change your rental dates – as long as we have availability (please note we can’t guarantee it)

    Once your rental has started:

    • You can extend your trip if the camper is available
    • But you cannot shorten your rental or get a refund for unused days

Extras & Insurance

  • expand_moreCan I choose the insurance when I pick up the camper van?
Yes, you can. It's no problem to edit your extras, insurances, or bundles upon arrival.
  • expand_moreIs insurance included in the rental price?
Yes, a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in the rental price, which limits the driver's liability to a certain amount. The liability amount is EUR 2.500,- for each accident. Please review the terms & conditions for CDW details before booking a campervan.
  • expand_moreWhat kind of insurance do you offer?
All of our insurance options are listed under the Extras section of our website, except for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which is included with your rental. Vátryggingafélag Íslands Hf. (VÍS) is our insurance provider, and all of our insurance falls under their policy terms. Here is a quick overview of our Insurance options: (click to enlarge) Remember to read through our Terms and Conditions for more information about insurance.
  • expand_moreWhat kind of insurance do you recommend?

The answer to this question really depends on personal preference, as people’s needs for peace of mind can vary greatly. We have witnessed many cases where people regret not buying extra insurance due to a costly incident and also cases where people never use the extra insurance that they bought. That is simply the nature of insurance; it is highly valuable when you need it but useless when you don’t. We simply cannot make that decision for others.

We can, however, tell you that our top 3 most popular extra insurance options are gravel protection, the Premium Package, and the Premium Package plus. We always recommend Gravel protection as a minimum as it's the most common damage to our cars. Click here to see our insurance guide.

Before you make any decisions about extra insurance, make sure to read our Terms for more information about the included CDW insurance. Also, make sure to check with your regular car insurance policy and any other insurance policies that you may have, such as your travel insurance, credit card benefits, etc.

  • expand_moreWhat are Happy Bundles?
Happy Bundles are a great way to save some money on extras & insurances. We offer 3 tiers (Happy, Happier and Happiest) to fit different needs of different campers. Check out our extras page for more details on each bundle.
  • expand_moreI selected a Bundle, how do I choose what extras I want?
If you selected Happy, Happier, or Happiest Bundle, you do not need to select insurance or extras additionally. You will select them upon arrival.

Iceland Travel

  • expand_moreDo you do personalized itineraries?
Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to plan individual trips. However, we understand that planning a trip can be overwhelming. That’s why we work hard to provide the necessary resources to help you plan your road trip. Here are some of the most valuable resources that we strongly recommend checking out: Happy Campers Travel Guides: our extensive guides will help you understand what to expect on your trip to Iceland. From camping culture to winter travel to how to pick the right vehicle for you - all our best tips are covered there. We are working hard to add more travel guides to our website; in the meantime, another great page is our blog archive. You will find their itinerary ideas, places to visit, travel tips, and links to more online resources. If you are looking for more detailed itineraries and travel guides, we highly recommend checking out Iceland with a View books. Jeannie is a local expert and generously shares the best travel tips. Lastly, I would strongly suggest joining our Camping Community on Facebook. It is a great way to connect with fellow happy campers. It is full of useful information (recommendations on what to see and do, itineraries, travel tips, and more) and many helpful people to share their experiences.
  • expand_moreAre there any campsites near the airport?

Yes! We’ve opened Happy Campsite Keflavík right in our backyard, just 6 minutes from KEF Airport. It’s the perfect place to rest after a long flight or get ready before heading home.

The campsite has all the essential facilities for a comfortable stay. Plus, if you're traveling with Happy Campers, you’ll get 20% off your stay!

You can find more details and book your spot here.

  • expand_moreWhere can we park/stay overnight?
Icelandic legislation prohibits parking overnight in a camper van outside organized campsites or urban areas. However, you may still set up a traditional tent in Iceland, with some restrictions. If interested, please ask us about the details of camping with a traditional tent. The most important thing to know is that different rules now apply to camper vans, so you must always find an organized campsite to spend the night. Check out this map for information about campsites that stay open during winter. Be a happy camper and take advantage of some of the amazing campsites all over the country!
  • expand_moreShould I buy the camping card? Where do I do that?

The Camping Card can be a great option if you plan to stay at participating campsites across Iceland. It gives you access to a selection of campsites for one flat fee. However, it's important to know that not all campsites accept the card, so whether it's worth it depends on your travel route and schedule.

You can find more information and purchase the card on the official Camping Card website.

Still unsure if it’s right for you? We wrote a helpful blog post on this topic to guide your decision: Do You Need a Camping Card in Iceland?

  • expand_moreDo I need to book campsites ahead of time?
In most cases, no. You do not need to reserve campsites in advance. Most campsites in Iceland operate on a first come, first served basis and rarely fill up completely. However, some campsites near popular areas or during busy weekends may offer online booking through their websites or apps like Parka. If you prefer to plan ahead or have a fixed itinerary, checking availability in advance can be helpful.
  • expand_moreWill it be too cold to travel in a camper van?
That depends on your personal tolerance for cold, which can vary a lot from person to person. For most travelers, cold weather is not a major issue in our camper vans. In the winter months, we recommend bringing or renting an extra sleeping bag and packing plenty of warm clothes. Our vans come with wool insulation, thick duvets and a reliable heating system, which keep most people comfortable even on chilly nights. Want to learn more about Iceland's weather? Check out our blog post: How Cold and Dark Does It Get in Winter?
  • expand_moreWhere can I get groceries for my trip?

There are several supermarkets near our office in Reykjanesbær, making it easy to stock up before you hit the road. We recommend Krónan or Bónus, as they are two of the most affordable options in Iceland.

Feel free to ask us at the office, and we’ll show you their locations on our map.

For more tips on where to shop across the country, check out our blog post: Where to Shop on Your Camping Trip

  • expand_moreHow should I plan my trip?
It's always good to be well prepared and thankfully there are many good resources online. A good place to start is to look at our resources section. Check out our Camping Community where Happy Campers share their best tips, experience, and questions. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask us questions at info@happycampers.is, on Facebook, or other social media. Also, remember to consider the weather and be flexible with your plans.
  • expand_moreWhat is the fuel price in Iceland?
Here you can find the latest fuel prices in Iceland.  To learn how to cut down on fuel costs during your trip, take a look at our blog post on how to save money on gas in Iceland.
  • expand_moreWhat are the emergency numbers in Iceland?
    112. The most important emergency number in Iceland is 112. Other important numbers include directory inquiries (118), police station (444-1000), search and rescue (570-5900), and healthcare services (1770).

Pickup & Dropoff

  • expand_moreHow do I pick up and return the van?
We offer a free shuttle service in the Keflavik area, including the airport. Simply choose the free shuttle option during the booking process. We'll pick you up from the airport or nearby hotel, drive you to our office (a 5-minute drive) and then introduce you to your new travel companion.
  • expand_moreHow does the FREE shuttle bus service work?
We offer a free shuttle bus service to our customers at Keflavik International Airport and within the greater Keflavik(Reykjanesbær) area.
  • expand_moreWhere should I wait for you at the airport?
After you go through baggage claim and customs, you will enter the arrivals area. You can wait anywhere in that area, including the seating area nearby. Please do not wait in the departures area or at the restaurants near the departure area. When it is getting close to your schedule shuttle time, please keep an eye out for us and let us know when you see us. We will be holding a sign with your name on it and will be wearing a Happy Campers jacket/shirt.
  • expand_moreWhat if my flight is delayed and/or lands after the last shuttle?
We’ve all been there and we feel your pain. But our opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:00 and we only offer a free shuttle service to/from the airport during those hours. – If your flight lands in Iceland at 17:00 or later, we suggest finding a place to stay until we open. Just let us know about this change immediately so we can reschedule the shuttle for you. For example, if your flight arrival changed from 15:00 to 22:00, you will have to pick up your camper van at 08:00 the next day, at the earliest. There are many accommodations available in the Keflavik area. – If your flight lands before 17:00, we will wait for you to go through security. Just make sure to have scheduled an airport pick up. For example, if you land at 16:45, and miss the last shuttle, we will find somebody to pick you up. However, if your plane lands at 17:05, unfortunately, you will need to find accommodation in the area until the next day.
  • expand_moreCan I use your shuttle if I'm outside Keflavik?
We only offer our free shuttle service within the Keflavik area. We do not offer our shuttle service to or from Reykjavik, which is about a 40 minute drive. To go to/from Reykjavik, we recommend booking a ticket on the airport/city bus with Grayline or Reykjavik Excursions. We can drive you to/pick you up from the airport when you use the airport bus during our office hours. You can also use the public bus number 55 which stops close to our office and goes to the airport and Reykjavik, you can find more info on www.bus.is . The final option is a Taxi, which is also the most expensive option.
  • expand_moreMy flight arrives before you open. What should I do in the meantime?
Unfortunately, some flights arrive in Iceland REALLY early. Our office opens at 8 AM and our free airport shuttle starts running at 8:15, so you might have some time to kill until we can pick you up. Thankfully, the airport has free WiFi, some comfortable chairs, and a coffee shop to make the wait easier. Around 8:15, please look out for us holding a Happy Campers sign with your name on it.
  • expand_moreCan you bring the campervan to another location?
We do not offer to bring the camper to you in Reykjavik, or any other location, and we also do not accept the campervan to be returned at any other location.
  • expand_moreHow do I get to your office from Reykjavik?
If you are staying in Reykjavik you need to make your own way to our office, or the airport, and you have some options:

The way most of our customers do it is that they take one of the Airport buses from Reykjavik to Keflavik airport. Once you reach the airport we could then simply come and pick you up and take you to our office which is pretty close. This is a pretty simple and economic option but you would need to let us know when to pick you up from the airport.

Another way would be taking the public bus number 55 which stops very close to our office at the bus stop "Tjarnarhverfi". It's a lower price than the airport bus but a little bit more complicated in my experience. You can see the bus schedules on their website www.bus.is.

The final and most convenient way is a taxi of course, but unfortunately, taxis are a bit expensive in Iceland and the ride would probably cost around 13,000-15,000 ISK (110-130 USD).

  • expand_moreCan I pick up or return the camper van outside opening hours?
The campervan can only be picked up during our opening hours. You would need to find accommodation in the area and have us pick you up the next morning. However, we offer a free 24/7 campervan dropoff service, so you can return the van at any time. Please read more about this service here or see the answer to this particular question above.
  • expand_moreCan I change my booking when I pick up the camper van?
Yes of course. You can add or remove any type of insurances or extras as you wish upon arrival. You can also change your rental dates, so long as we have availability, which we cannot guarantee. Once the rental starts, you can only add days to your rental and cannot make it shorter.
  • expand_moreHow do I schedule a shuttle to the airport?
There is no need to schedule a shuttle to the airport after you return the van. The shuttle will run every hour (on the hour) for customers returning the camper van, so there is no need to schedule a shuttle for returning customers. Just remember that our latest airport shuttle dropoff is at 16:30, not 17:00, so make sure that you return the camper van before 16:30 if you want a ride to the airport.
  • expand_moreHow does your 24/7 drop off service work?
When using our booking engine, you are choosing to use this service if you select a drop-off time outside our 08:00-17:00 office hours. If you decide to use this service, please keep the following in mind:
    • We won't be there to assist you when you return the van.
    • Please leave the van in the designated "campervan drop off" area
    • You will have to leave your campervan key in the designated return box by the front entrance
    • You won't be present during the campervan inspection. This means that in case of car damage, we can only communicate with you remotely, through email and/or phone. We will be unable to give you an idea of the expected cost or provide you with other useful information that we try to give our travelers in those circumstances in person.
    • You will not have access to our free shuttle service.
    • We will not be able to provide you with a physical copy of your invoice. You can always email us if you need digital copies or have questions about anything.
    • We cannot guarantee assistance with your campervan dropoff even if you end up returning the van late when the office has opened. For example, if you schedule a dropoff time at 06:00 but end up returning at 08:30 without letting us know, your dropoff will still be considered "after hours" with all the limitations it entails, such as the free shuttle.
  • expand_moreHow do I get to the airport outside business hours?
With our 24/7 drop off service, you can drop off the campervan any time of day. Unfortunately, Happy Shuttle only runs during business hours. If you need to get to the airport, please check public bus no. 55 (the bus stop close to the Happy Campers office is called Tjarnarhverfi) or call taxi.
  • expand_moreWhat if I don't refill the fuel tank?
When returning the van, we ask that you return it with the same amount of fuel as when you received it. Usually, this means a full tank of fuel. If the rental car is not returned with a full tank of fuel, we will charge the renter for the fuel (based on current fuel prices) + 20% service fee for filling up the tank. Thankfully, there is a gas station located on our property, so this is rarely an issue.

Campers

  • expand_moreCan we sleep in a campervan in winter?
Our campervans, equipped with a quality Webasto heater, are guaranteed to run all night if necessary. We go over how to best operate the heater during your check-in orientation, but you can be sure that our campers will keep you warm all night all-year round.
  • expand_moreWhat kind of camper vans do you have?
You can see all the different camper types we offer on the front page of our website. We offer campers of every size, manual and automatic, old (EX) and new. Actual make and model may vary depending on availability, so we reserve the right to deliver a similar vehicle. By similar vehicle, we mean that we will deliver a vehicle that will fulfill the requirements of the vehicle type and class that you booked. Not all our camper vans are brand new, but they are all well maintained and in very good condition.
  • expand_moreDo you have automatic campers?
Yes we do! The vast majority of our campers are automatic. Currently, only EX models have manual transmission.
  • expand_moreAre your campervans 4x4 vehicles?
Yes, all Happy 4x4 category campers (Happy 4x4, Happy 4x4-3pax and Happy 4x4 XL) are 4WD and Automatic and are suitable for driving in the highlands. The Happy 4x4 are equipped for the harshest Icelandic conditions and F-roads. They are equipped with a raised air intake (snorkel) so it can even handle river crossings, for example. Even though we highly advise against river crossings and suggest avoiding it if you can, river crossings are allowed in the Happy 4x4. Read more about the reasons we advice against it in our 4x4 Campervans in Iceland post. Also, keep in mind that the following roads are off-limits, even in 4x4 cars: 337, 622, F26, F210, F578, F910, F980, F249. These roads can barely be considered roads and banning these roads is industry standard in Iceland. We will cover this in more detail during your check-in orientation.
  • expand_moreDo you offer 4-5 person campers?
Yes, Happy 3 and Happy 4x4 XL can fit up to 5 people.
  • expand_moreDoes the camper have a toilet and/or shower?
No, our campers do not have a toilet or shower. The reason is that our goal is to make our camper vans as simple as possible to drive and operate. Showers and travel toilets require a lot of space and are complicated to operate. But do not worry, in Iceland there are many gas stations, small shops, and restaurants where you can use the bathroom facilities. You can also find our famous geothermal swimming pools in almost every small village around the island where you can swim, shower, go to the hot tubs etc. for a very small fee. Most campgrounds also offer good facilities for travelers to use. For this reason, we decided to not have toilets and showers in our camper vans.
  • expand_moreAre your campervans suitable to drive in Iceland in winter?
Yes, we only stay open during the months that it is safe and relatively easy to drive our camper vans around Iceland. We equip our camper vans with winter tires with spikes during the winter months, and the main roads are generally well-maintained and cleared by the government to make driving safe and easy. However, Iceland is known for unpredictable weather, so we highly recommend paying close attention to the weather and road conditions. Be cautious, use common sense, and always err on the side of safety.
  • expand_moreDo I need to bring a sleeping bag?
The campervan comes with a sheet, pillows, blankets, and thick comforters, which most people are comfortable with during the summer months. We strongly recommend bringing (or renting) sleeping bags in colder months as the weather can vary a lot in those months. Sleeping bags are also recommended in the summer time for those who get very easily cold.
  • expand_moreWhat is the fuel consumption ?
Our van's fuel consumption/mileage is the following: Happy 1: approx. 6-7 liters/100km. Fuel tank size is 55 liters. Happy 1 Ex: approx. 7-10 liters/100km. Fuel tank size is 55 liters Happy 2: approx. 7-8 liters/100km. Fuel tank size is 80 liters Happy 3: approx. 8-10 liters/100km. Fuel tank size is 80 liters Happy 4x4: approx. 7-8 liters/100km. Fuel tank size is 70 liters Happy 4x4 XL: approx. 8-10 liters/100km. Fuel tank size is 75 liters.
  • expand_moreAre extra gas canisters included in the van?
Yes, 4 extra gas canisters come with the camper van for free. This is in addition to the leftover gas in the canister from the previous rental. This will usually last 10-15 days of cooking for 2 people but 7-10 days for 4 people. For longer rentals, or people who are planning on using the gas stove a lot, we suggest purchasing extra gas canisters, as they can be difficult to buy in other locations around Iceland.
  • expand_moreCan we use a child seat in the campervan?
To guarantee security, we only allow child seats in Happy 2, Happy 2 - 3pax, Happy 2 EX, Happy 3, Happy 3 EX categories, Happy 4x4, Happy 4x4 - 3 pax and Happy 4x4 XL. If your child is over 130CM in height it's also possible to turn off the Airbag in the front seat of the Happy 1 Auto and Happy 1 EX. We offer great varieties of child car seats and booster for all age.
  • expand_moreHow can I listen to music in my campervan?
All good road trips include good music! Depending on the campervan category, you will find the following features in each camper van: Happy 1/Auto: USB port, CD Player, Radio, Bluetooth/Auxiliary cable Happy 2/Auto: USB port, Bluetooth, Radio, MP3/Auxiliary cable Happy 3: USB port, Bluetooth, Radio, MP3/Auxiliary cable Happy 1 EX: USB port, MP3/Auxiliary cable, Radio Happy 2 EX: USB port, Bluetooth, Radio, MP3/Auxiliary cable Happy 3 EX: USB port, Bluetooth, Radio, MP3/Auxiliary cable
  • expand_moreHow can I charge my electronics (phone, camera, etc.) during my trip?
Our camper vans have a standard 12V car socket (cigarette lighter). Our Happy 2 camper vans have two 12V sockets, while other categories have just one. All of the campervans have at least 1 USB port as well. We highly recommend bringing your own inverters, converters, cables, and multi-plugs for your charging needs. We offer a 12V-230V inverter that you can rent for EUR 20 per rental. The inverter will transform the 12V socket into a standard outlet that you can use to charge your devices.
  • expand_moreDo I have to return the camper van clean?
We ask all of our customers to return the camper van in good shape, inside and outside. We do not require you to return the camper van completely clean, but if it is exceptionally dirty, requiring difficult stain removal or other special cleaning efforts, we will charge a cleaning fee of €100.
  • expand_moreIs smoking allowed?
No, smoking is not allowed in the van or in our office. Travelers will have to pay the extra cleaning fee if we find evidence for smoking in the van.

Office

  • expand_moreWhere do I pick up and return the van?
Both the campervan pickup and return take place at our main office in Stapabraut 21, 260 Reykjanesbær. All of our campervan rentals begin and end at this location, so make sure to use our free shuttle service for easy transport to or from our office. We do not offer to bring the camper to you in Reykjavik, or any other location, and we also do not accept the campervan to be returned at any other location
  • expand_moreWhat are your opening hours?

If you are hurt or in danger, please call Iceland's emergency number 112 immediately.
  • expand_moreDo you offer emergency breakdown assistance?
Absolutely! We offer a 24/7 roadside assistance service for all of our customers. Just call our service number (which you will get when you arrive) and we will help you find a solution to your problem. We weren’t kidding about keeping things simple, easy, and fun. Please keep in mind that we have limited resources and are only located in Keflavik. We use any means necessary to find a solution to your problem. In some cases, we drive to your breakdown location ourselves, while in other cases we might send a 3rd party. If the easiest solution requires you to take certain actions, we might ask you to do that. This is not a 24/7 full-service roadside assistance with no questions asked. We simply guarantee to be available via our emergency phone at all times to make sure that your problem is solved.
