Every Happy Campers rental includes basic insurance to get you started, but if you want extra protection or peace of mind, we offer a range of insurance upgrades and value bundles.

Whether you’re sticking to the Ring Road or heading into the Highlands, our insurance options are flexible, easy to understand, and designed to fit your trip.

You can choose your coverage during booking or at pickup and our team is always happy to help you decide.

What’s Included in the Base Price?

Every Happy Campers rental includes the essentials you need to travel safely in Iceland, no surprise add-ons, no confusing fine print.

Included in every booking:

  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) – Covers damage to the campervan in case of an accident, with a deductible of €2,500.
  • TPL (Third-Party Liability Insurance) – Covers any damage or injury you may cause to others while driving.

These two insurances are built into your base price, so you never drive without protection. From there, you can add extra coverage or choose a bundle that matches your travel style — but you’ll always have a solid foundation included from day one.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

CDW covers major damage to the campervan if you’re involved in a collision. It limits how much you’re financially responsible for. With basic CDW, the self-risk is €2,500.

Third-Party Liability Insurance

TPL covers any damage or injury you cause to other vehicles, people or their property while driving the camper. It does not cover damage to your camper.

Specialized Insurance Add-Ons

Iceland’s roads and weather can be tough on campervans. While basic insurance covers major accidents, it doesn’t protect you from the most common issues like gravel chips, sand damage, or flat tires.

That’s where our Specialized Insurances come in. These optional waivers help cover everyday risks that can quickly become costly.

You can add them individually or get them included in our Happy Bundles or Premium Insurance Packages for better value and broader protection.

Gravel Protection

It covers damage to the windscreen and headlights caused by loose gravel, which is very common even on paved roads.

Sand & Ash Insurance

It protects against damage caused by sandstorms or volcanic ash, which can damage the van’s paint, windows, or wheels, lowering your self-risk for these repairs from the full value of the van to €1.000.

Theft Insurance

Covers you if the van or Happy Campers rental items are stolen. (It does not cover personal belongings; for that, use travel insurance.)

Scratch & Dent Insurance

It covers minor scratches and dents under 3 cm in size, which often occur on tight roads and tricky parking spots. (Bigger damage is only covered with Premium+.)

Covers the cost of replacing a damaged tire due to punctures or road hazards. (For rim damage, Premium+ insurance is required.)

Want more protection without the stress of surprise repair costs?
Our Premium Insurance Packages are designed to reduce your deductible, expand your coverage, and help you travel to Iceland with total confidence.

You’ll always be covered by CDW and TPL. But by upgrading to one of these packages, you can lower your self-risk, bundle specialized protections, and enjoy extra support if anything goes wrong on the road.

Covers everything in Premium — plus wind damage, large scratches, rim damage, and full theft protection — all with €0 deductible. Also includes free roadside services like lockout or misfuelling support.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

What Insurance Does Not Cover

We want you to feel confident and covered, but also well-informed. Even with full coverage (Premium+ or Happiest Bundles), there are some situations and types of damage that no insurance covers.

Here’s what you’re still responsible for as the driver:

• Negligent or reckless driving (e.g., off-road or under the influence)

• Unauthorized use (e.g., unlisted driver)

• Interior damage or misuse

• Roof damage from low clearances

• Water damage from rivers or sea

• Lost or stolen personal items

• Wrong vehicle use (e.g., 2WD on F-roads)

    Yes, you can. It’s no problem to edit your extras, insurances, or bundles upon arrival.

    Yes, a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in the rental price, which limits the driver’s liability to a certain amount. The liability amount is EUR 2.500,- for each accident. Please review the terms & conditions for CDW details before booking a campervan.

  • expand_moreWhat kind of insurance do you recommend?

    The answer to this question really depends on personal preference, as people’s needs for peace of mind can vary greatly. We have witnessed many cases where people regret not buying extra insurance due to a costly incident and also cases where people never use the extra insurance that they bought. That is simply the nature of insurance; it is highly valuable when you need it but useless when you don’t. We simply cannot make that decision for others.

    We can, however, tell you that our top 3 most popular extra insurance options are gravel protection, the Premium Package, and the Premium Package plus. We always recommend Gravel protection as a minimum as it’s the most common damage to our cars. Click here to see our insurance guide.

    Before you make any decisions about extra insurance, make sure to read our Terms for more information about the included CDW insurance. Also, make sure to check with your regular car insurance policy and any other insurance policies that you may have, such as your travel insurance, credit card benefits, etc.
