Iceland is a beautiful place to travel, and there are so many places where you can visit. If you plan a trip to Iceland, you may wonder which sites you should go to. In this blog post, I will tell you about the most popular destinations among local Icelanders. Consider including them in your itinerary when visiting Iceland in 2022.
Stórurð
Stórurð is by many considered to be the most beautiful area in east Iceland. It’s about 90 km from Egilsstaðir, the main town in East Iceland, and it features spectacular lakes and rugged mountains. Stórurð is an amazing place to visit if you like nature and have time to explore. It will take some effort to get there – the hike is 2-3 hours one way (starting point is Vatnskarð service station). However, if you have an extra day to spend in the East and the weather is nice, visiting this hidden gem is definitely worth it.
Sky Lagoon
One of Iceland’s most recent attractions is also one of the most popular places to visit in Iceland – Sky Lagoon is a geothermal spa with a beautiful view over the ocean. It is more than just a pool! Their signature ritual (included in the Pure Pass and Sky Pass) is a unique spa experience grounded in centuries-old Icelandic traditions. Located minutes away from Reykjavík, Sky Lagoon is a popular spot when visiting the capital of Iceland.
Flateyri
When people ask me where to go if they have driven the Ring Road, my answer is always Westfjords. Visiting this sparsely populated North-West region can be a trip on its own. We spent five days driving around the last time I went there, and I felt rushed. However, there is a hidden gem that attracts many locals; that’s the town of Flateyri. Flateyri is a lovely little town with a population of just 200 people, and its small size makes it feel like a place where everyone knows each other. The scenery is stunning, so make sure you have a camera handy. If you are planning to explore Westfjords, check out our Ultimate Guide to Westfjords.
Siglufjörður
Siglufjörður is a small town in the North of Iceland that many travelers overlook. Still, it should be on your list of places to visit in Iceland in 2022 if you’re looking for a relaxing experience. High mountains surround the town. The town is located on a fjord, the water and mountains make it very picturesque. The village has a few interesting museums and galleries, so be sure to check them out as well.
Further Resources
In order to experience unspoiled Iceland’s beauty, you need to be close to nature. There are so many hidden gems to choose from that this is by no means a comprehensive list. However, these four places were popular destinations among locals last year. I’m personally looking forward to (re)visiting these places myself in 2022!
